Healthcare doesn’t have a retention problem. It has a leadership problem.

I’ve watched this up close through Benes Companies and through conversations with providers across every discipline. The people leaving aren’t leaving because they stopped caring. They’re leaving because the system never gave them the tools to protect themselves from it.

Vicki Landers gets this at a level most leadership consultants don’t — because she came up through the clinical side. Physical therapist, clinical translator, change manager. She watched the same information land as liberation for one provider and as threat to another, and she got curious about why. That curiosity became a coaching practice built around one core idea: your reactions are costing you more than you realize.

She calls it the lens you wear. Victim lens, conflict lens, tolerance, compassion, curiosity — each one produces a completely different culture, not just in you but in everyone around you. And here’s what hit me in our conversation: most healthcare leaders are making lens choices unconsciously, at speed, under pressure, and calling it decisive leadership.

Victor Frankl wrote that between stimulus and response there is a space, and in that space lies our freedom. Vicki’s entire practice is helping healthcare leaders find that space and make it wider. Not softer. Not slower. Just conscious.

If your organization is hemorrhaging good people and you’ve exhausted the structural explanations — compensation, scheduling, staffing ratios — this episode is worth your time. Sometimes the lever is smaller and closer than you think.

Watch the full episode above. And if this connects with something you’re navigating in your organization, Vicki’s contact is in the description.
